NEW ORLEANS SAINTS PREVIEW: Slow Marching For The Saints

NFC South Preview

August 30th, 2016

Offensive Nuggets

This team is just as stacked on offense as they always have been, but this year should see a positive trend relative to last season.  The receiver position is deep again, Drew Brees loves his TEs and has great one in Coby Fleener to throw to, and the RB position is deep with both Ingram and Hightower.  Business as usual for the Saints offensively…

Defensive Nuggets

… defensively is another story.  On paper this unit looks like it should be stout, but several players have been huge let-downs in the past.  The Saints cut Keenan Lewis leaving Delvin Breaux as their top cover corner.  Jairus Byrd can’t stay on the field, an the team was the worst in the league last season in defending pretty much anything.  The truth is, no one knows how good the Saints are going to be, but rest assured Dennis Allen will get all defensive players maximizing their potential.

Don’t Forget

C.J. Spiller was a black and gold mirage in the French Quarter last season.  Spiller who battled injuries all season, has the perfect skill set in this offense, he just needs to stay on the field to use it.  He’s capable, and with some decent volume, it will be difficult to forget about him.

X-Factor

If there ever was a time the Saints needed a safety who could step up and make plays it was this season.  Jairus Byrd is the only guy who can do this, and as he goes, so does the Saints secondary.  We all hope that Drew Brees’ final years on wasted on more bad defenses.

Fantasy Fruit

Drew Brees is easily a top five QB this season.  Take the golden goose and enjoy the savings.  Michael Thomas is this year what Brandon Cooks was two seasons ago.  A dynamic play maker with plus slot skills and great football acumen.  Late round sleeper for sure!

Verdict

The Saints get Seattle, Denver and Oakland at home but do have to travel to Arizona and Kansas City.  Their offense is, but they face a lot of great defenses while their own defense is unproven.  It’s tough not to have more faith in the Saints defense, but too many hearts have been broken.  8-8 seems like a generous record, but the offense is that good.
